Final Exam: Tuesday, 5/18, 7:30-9:30 pm

Comments:

Prerequisites for this course include a working knowledge of lines, equations, graphs, and trigonometric functions and a comfortable facility with algebra. If you feel you cannot keep up with the pace of the course or cannot pass the basic skills test, please switch to MA133 or speak with me right away.

I expect you to READ the book. Sometimes my lectures will follow the book closely. Sometimes they will not and I will expect you to get something out of both lectures and the text. Be aware that this text isn't necessarily like the last math book you used; you are expected to read the sections from beginning to end and not just glance at formulas. The best way to read is to have a pencil and paper nearby to you can try working the examples yourself before you look at the solution in the text.

I encourage all students to form study groups as soon as possible, to work out homework problems and study for tests. Get to know your fellow students! All the other MA160 classes will follow approximately the same syllabus, so you might want to hook up with students from other sections too.

Worksheets:

Sometimes I will assign problems or worksheets during class. I consider these to be an integral part of the class/lecture, and I expect you to participate in them and study them as you would the lecture or the homework. Usually, worksheets begun in class should be completed before the next class period. Unless otherwise stated, worksheets will not be collected/graded.

Homework:

Homework will be assigned and collected daily. There will be a ten-minute ``homework quiz'' every day, consisting of a problem from the homework assignment which is being collected, or a slight variation on a homework problem. (to be done without notes, but with a calculator if necessary).

Labs:

The labs will be run semi-independently from the course; the lab instructor Veronica (vpuentev@mtu.edu) will give you further details in lab on Thursday. Feel free to ask me questions on the labwork and how it relates to class material.

Grades:

Tests:

There will be four one-hour in-class tests. Changes to the following schedule will be announced in class.

Final Exam:

There will be a comprehensive final exam, common to all MA160 classes. To be sure that you have mastered/memorized certain skills, part of the final exam must be taken without calculator.

The questions on the final will be divided into four categories. Three of these will contain problems drawn from the material covered on tests 1, 2, and 4 during the quarter. You lowest test score (only) on these tests will be compared to your score on the corresponding questions on the final, and if the score from the final is higher, then it will replace your test score. If it is lower, the original score will stand.

Missed Tests:

If you must miss an test due to illness or personal loss, please contact me BEFORE the test (if I am not available, please leave a message with the math office secretary or with the dean of students office). Usually NO MAKE-UP TESTS will be given; the missing test will be recorded as a zero and taken as your lowest score.
