Huaizhen Qin to represent Michigan Tech for the 2008 Distinguished Dissertation Competition
The Graduate School has announced that Huaizhen Qin is Michigan Tech's
nominee for the 2008 Council of Graduate Schools/University Microfilms
International Distinguished Dissertation Award in the Mathematics,
Physical Sciences and Engineering division.

Qin was advised by Associate Professor Shuanglin Zhang and received a
PhD in Mathematical Sciences in 2008. His dissertation, "Statistical
Approaches for Genome-Wide Association Study and Microarray Analysis,"
developed three statistical techniques that are useful in mapping
complex genes. The results of his research could be used to analyze
complex genome sequences and identify genetic causes of disease. Qin
will continue his research as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison in the Department of Biostatistics and Medical
Informatics.
