Title of Project: MTU Graduate Teaching Fellows in Copper Country Schools
Project Summary: This project placed science, mathematics, engineering,
and technology (SMET) graduate students from Michigan Technological University
(MTU) into schools of the Copper Country Intermediate School District (CCISD)
to serve as resource consultants to K-12 teachers. Overall goals of the
project were the improvement of mathematics and science programs and dissemination
of the best ideas and practices which evolved from the project. Activities of
SMET fellows in the schools included
- developing science and mathematics experiments
to enable students to actively engage in doing and
learning the subject,
- developing family math, family science, and family
computing programs,
- helping teachers apply the tools of technology, and
- sharing
their special interests and career options within their major field of study.
SMET fellows and cooperating teachers hosted a two day hands-on
summer workshop for 70 Upper Peninsula K-12 mathematics and science teachers.
The workshop was held during the summer of the year 2001 and had a
space odyssey theme.
