Built-in Explorations

The CBR (calculator-based ranger) includes several sample applications to demonstrate the capabilities of the Ranger. This activity guide lists the steps necessary to start these applications, once they have been downloaded to a TI-83 or TI-83plus calculator. (See the manual for information about downloading the applications.)

Setting Up

  • You should work in small groups (2 4 students) during this activity.
  • Attach the Ranger to the TI-83 or TI-83plus graphing calculator using a link cable.
  • Turn on the calculator.
  • If you have a TI-83plus:
  • Press the APPS button
  • Select CBL/CBR and hit [ENTER]
  • Select Ranger and hit [ENTER] to start the Ranger program.
  • If you have a regular TI-83:
  • Press the PRGM button
  • Select Ranger and hit [ENTER]
  • Hit [ENTER] again to start the Ranger program
  • Distance Match

    1.  From the Main Menu choose 3: APPLICATIONS
    2.  From the Units Menu choose 1: METERS
    3.  From the Applications Menu choose 1: DIST MATCH
    4.  Follow the directions on screen
    ·Hit [ENTER] when done to return to the Options Menu

    ·Repeat if desired. Let each person in your group work try to match the same graph.

    ·Who can get the best match?

    5.  Finished? From the Options Menu,choose 3. APPLICATIONS
     

    Velocity Match

    1.  From the Units Menu choose 1. METERS
    2.  From the Applications Menu choose 2. VELOCITY MATCH
    3.  Follow the directions on screen
    ·Try to match the velocity graph (this one is tough!)
    ·Hit [ENTER] when done to return to the Options Menu

    ·Work together to get a good match!

    4.  Finished? Use the menus to quit the program. Then turn off your calculator.
