Information for Humanities and Social Science Majors

Humanities (including English, English Education, STC, STA, Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts) and Social Science majors should follow these guidelines for choosing the correct math course:

ACT score below 19 (SAT below 500):
Students in this test score range have the choice of taking either MA1030 College Algebra I or MA1020 Quantitative Literacy. Both of these courses will satisfy your math requirement. You may wish to choose MA1020 if that is the only math course you intend to take during your college career. If you are confident about math and/or plan to take Calculus, you should take MA1030.

ACT score 19-25 (SAT 500-590):
Students in this test score range have the choice of taking either MA1032 Data, Functions and Graphs or MA1020 Quantitative Literacy. Both of these courses will satisfy your math requirement. You may wish to choose MA1020 if that is the only math course you intend to take during your college career. If you are confident about math and/or plan to take Calculus, you should take MA1032.

* The Department of Social Sciences recommends that Social Studies Education Majors take MA1032 rather than MA1020.

ACT score 26 or higher (SAT 600 or higher):
Students in this test score range may take MA1020, MA1032, or one of the Calculus I courses (MA1135, MA1160 or MA1161). Please read the above guidelines for choosing between MA1020 and MA1032.
