If you wish to challenge your math
placement, you should take the online placement test during the spring
testing window. Do not wait until you come to campus to try
changing your math placement. If you experience difficulties with
the test, you should contact Ann Humes, Director of First Year
Mathematics, at amhumes@mtu.edu or (906) 487-2938, during the testing window.
INFORMATION AND ADVICE BY COURSE
No Placement: This test is
required if you have not submitted an ACT or SAT score to Michigan
Tech. Please be sure to complete the test by the test deadline,
or contact Ann Humes (amhumes@mtu.edu)
or (906) 487-2938 if you cannot access or complete
the test.
MA1030 College Algebra I:
The placement test
will not place you into a lower course. You will either remain in
MA1030 or be placed into MA1032 (Data, Functions and Graphs Plus).
MA1032 (Data, Functions and Graphs
Plus): The placement test
may place you into a higher course (Calculus I), a lower course
(College Algebra I), or you may remain in MA1032. The test
result will determine your final placement. Please carefully
consider whether you wish to take this test.
MA1161/MA1135 (Calculus
I): Recent data indicate that students in your test score range may have
difficulties in Calculus, even though our current placement guidelines
do in fact place you into a Calculus I course. To ensure that you
are are placed correctly and are successful in your first math course
at MTU, we STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to take the online
placement test. This test will give us a better indication of
what course you will be most successful in, whether it be a Calculus
course, or MA1032 (Data, Functions and Graphs). Please contact
Ann Humes (amhumes@mtu.edu)
or (906) 487-2938, if you have questions.
MA1160 (Calculus I):
The online
placement test CANNOT place you into a higher course and, therefore, is
not
available to you. If you wish to place yourself into a lower
course, you may do so when you register for classes. Please see
additional notes below for information about Advanced Placement.
OTHER MATH PLACEMENT ISSUES
Advanced Placement Testing:
If you are taking the College Board AP test this spring, placement
guidelines based on your test score can be found at our web
site (www.math.mtu.edu).
You must take
the AP test in order for us to
use this as a placement tool; simply taking a class titled AP Calculus
is not sufficient for placement. An AP score will override any
other math placement.
Transfer Students: If you
have math transfer credits from another university, these credits will
be used to determine your math placement. In this case, you do
not need to take the placement exam. If you have not taken a
previous college math course, you may either take the placement exam or
defer to your placement based on your ACT or SAT score. If you
have no such test score, you should take this e
