COURSE WORK OPTION
"This is a rigorous program that
certainly
gave me a great start." --former MaCH-I student
The MaCH-I course
work option allows students
to take a mathematics class, an English or chemistry class, and a
physical
education class to complete up to eight and a half credits of college
before
the hectic beginning of their freshman year! Students can get college
(and their
GPAs!) off to a good start by focusing on a just a few classes over the
summer. These summer classes have very small enrollments, so the
atmosphere
is supportive and interactive; students get to know their teachers and
one another.
We plan initial placement in an
entry-level
math course for all MaCH-I students based on the following departmental
recommendations:
| ACT Math Score |
SAT Math Score |
Course/Credits |
| no score |
no score |
Dependent on math diagnostic test |
| below 19 |
below 500 |
MA1030 College Algebra I / 3 cr. |
| 19-28 |
500-640 |
MA1032 Data, Functions and Graphs Plus / 4 cr |
| 29 and above |
650 and above |
MA1160 Calculus I with Technology / 4 cr. |
Students may take
an online math diagnostic
test prior to arriving on campus; this test can make sure students are
registered for the course best suited to their current skill level.
In addition to the math course, students
have a choice of taking either an English course - Introduction to
Speech Communications (HU2830 / 3 cr.) or Preparatory Chemistry (CH1000
/ 3 cr.).
Physical Education (SDC Activities PE0210 / .5 cr.) is also
available.
The tentative schedule for this seven-week
session is as follows:

Students who successfully complete
MA1032 (Data, Functions and
Graphs)
will be ready for MA1151(Calculus I), MA1160/MA1161 (Calculus I with
Technology), or MA1135 (Calculus for Life Sciences) in the fall.
Students who successfully complete
MA1160 (Calculus I with
Technology)
will be ready for MA2160 (Calculus II with Technology) in the fall.
In addition, this option offers
- Evening tutoring by upperclass
students
- Weekend activities such as picnics,
hikes, and bonfires
