FAQ

Chances are good that if you've got a question, somebody's already asked it.  Scan the list below to find your answer or see what others have been wondering about. If you don't find the information you need, please contact the Michigan Tech math department at 906/482-2068.

Q. I want to take the course work option.  How do I know which math class to register for?

A. Please see the placement guide.  The math class you enroll in is based on your ACT or SAT score in math.

Q. My ACT (or SAT) score doesn't reflect my current math ability. Can I register for a higher- level class?

A. If you wish to take a higher-level math class than the one that our guide suggests, you must take the math department's diagnostic test.  Contact the Director of First Year Math (906/487-2938) for more information.  Just don't forget that college math classes are typically two or three times more difficult than high-school level classes, so just because you have already taken precalculus in high-school, you are not necessarily ready for Michigan Tech's Calculus I.

Q. Can I get financial aid to cover my expenses?

A.  You can use financial aid to cover the MaCH-I Coursework Option but not the Workshop Option.  You must fill out separate forms for summer financial aid;  priority is given to those who apply by March 15, 2007.  For more information or to request forms, contact the Office of Financial Aid (906/487-2622) or visit  them on the web at  http://www.finaid.mtu.edu

* When contacting the Financial Aid Office, please identify yourself as a MaCH-1 student.

Q. Can I take both the coursework option and a workshop?

A. Ambitious!  We like that; however, the workshop overlaps the course work option, and so it is not possible to do both.

Q. I need some money!  Will I be able to work while enrolled in MaCH-I?

A. MaCH-I provides enough educational and recreational activities to keep you pretty busy, but you are certainly free to find an on- or off-campus job while participating in the program.

Q. What do I do with all of my stuff between the end of MaCH-I and the beginning of fall semester?  Please don't tell me I have to take it all home!

A. You will be able to store your belongings on campus until school begins in the fall.  MaCH-I students will move their belongings to their fall room assignment in mid-August.  Contact Travis Pierce (Associate Director, Housing & Residential Life) at 906/487-2687 if you have questions.

For more information, please contact Ann Humes, Director of First-Year Mathematics at either 906/487-2938 or amhumes@mtu.edu
